Lard, anyone?

I really need to know this, so please respond.

I LOVE the oreo cookie itself, but CANNOT stand the nasty stuff inside. In elementary school someone told me that the filling was made of sugar-flavored lard, or shortening, and i've never been able to eat it since!! In face, I just finished scraping the insides of 3 cookies and had them with milk...yum...and the filling got thrown away. (Does that just kill some of you pseudo-lard-lovers??)

I just need to know if there's anyone else out there who prefers the cookie without the filling. I've asked over 20 people over the years, but thought i could reach even more through this post.

Am i the only one??

EDIT: i'm not saying that it is lard inside (i'm sure it's not), that's just what i was led to believe, and i've never been the same.

have you ever had the oreo knockoffs from trader joes? they are called Joe Joe's and are AWESOME. patrick says they are WAY better than the original oreos. first of all, the cream is NOT lard, but REAL vanilla bean cream! and patrick's favorite part about them is that there is TWICE the amount of cream inside (like a double-stuf)! you can enjoy every last bite knowing you are ingesting ZERO lard!

I am going to pretend I didn't read this. I don't want anything to come between me and my oreos and thinking that the yummy cream inside is actually lard...well I just can't handle it. I am blocking this from my memory.

I will try to remember the next time I eat an Oreo cookie that it might be lard. That sounds really gross! I really like them too! I guess I will just try to find a different cookie that is yummy.

I like the cookie better than the creme, but I won't go out of my way to avoid the creme. My mom has been known to scrape the creme off the cookie and just throw it away. I'm surprised I don't mind eating the creme. Normally I'm opposed to white things. Maybe I secretly like the lard?.

Emily, the cream is the only good part of an oreo. I have some interesting info for you on the last study you were doing about people who grew up with lots of sweets vs. people who didn't. I will have to call you with the details.

So, I'm kind of worried that I might start getting hate mail due to this comment/confession. But it MIGHT have been me who long ago ruined your relationship with the Oreo. My brother Matt went through a huge no lard phase and implaned all sorts of food fears in my head...so I'm wondering if I somehow passed that on to you in our Elementary days. (please don't hate me! Try to remember happy moments like "and when the night falls"...oh, we were good!) If it helps, I can't ever eat an oreo without thinking the same thing, however, the difference is that my will power is not as good as yours and I just say to the lard cookies "bring it on". Probably not very good...but I have learned a lot from your post and hopefully now I can eat them fear free. I do sincerely apologize for any mental trauma this has caused you over the years. Just think, now you can make up for it and eat double the oreos and double the "vanilla bean cream" mmmmmmm. Happy eating!
